Hydroponic System Reservoir
What size hydroponics reservoir do I need?
General Rule on Hydroponics System Reservoir Size
- Small plants, minimum 0.5 gallons per plant
- Medium size plants, minimum 1 to 1.5 gallons per plant
- Large plants, minimum 2.5 gallons per plant
The figures above should be considered as a minimum. Environmental conditions and other factors will affect a plants nutrient and water uptake. We prefer to double the minimum water volume recommendation to start. Always plan properly. When setting up your reservoir or purchasing one, you need to plan for a reservoir to handle plants near your harvest, not when they are seedlings. Starting with the right size reservoir is important. In the beginning, when plants are small, simply fill the reservoir a quarter of the way, half way, etc depending on the size of plants.
Pro Tip: Mark the inside of your reservoir with a permanent marker at different levels – 1 gallon, 2 gallons, 5 gallons, 10 gallons, etc. Keep a quick journal on water usage and levels. After a short period of time you will have a very standard system you can follow to keep your hydroponics system running at peak performance.
